  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Robert Mamrak -- Fills in some gaps : I read the Kindle version of this book because I couldn’t wait for the hardcover print to be available in the USA. In addition to books on the Pogues, I’ve read all four MacGowan biographies: Ian O’Doherty's "Shane MacGowan, Last of the Celtic Soul Rebels"; Joe Merrick's "London Irish Punk Life and Music... Shane MacGowan"; MacGowan’s wife's "A Drink with Shane MacGowan"; and my own "Rake at the Gates of Hell, Shane MacGowan in Context." This new biography, being the first in a decade, brings us up to date. While MacGowan has been less than productive over the past ten years, this is nonetheless a welcome addition to his story. The author did several interviews with MacGowan’s friends and family and extensive excerpts are in the text. I especially liked the many old MacGowan family photographs in the book. If you are a Pogues or Shane MacGowan fan you should get this. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from John McGovern -- A Great read! : At last the long awaited, biog of the genius that is Shane MacGowan.I have read this book twice, well written, clearly well researched.Maybe as a POGUES fan of long standing,i am perhaps something of a pedant.I did discover a few factual errors,as i have done with previous Shane/Pogues-related books. For instance, when Pogues manager Frank Murray was told by the band,in his office, that they no longer wanted him as manager, after a few choice words,Frank left his office and told his assistant ,Joey that he was about to be offered his job. This is true, though Joey already knew about this,a few weeks before, following a band meeting on their tour bus in Germany.I was on that bus,en route to Hanover, having performed in Berlin the previous night.Did i say pedant? Still,it is what it is,a very fine book,i'll be looking forward to my third reading of it....soon. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Admac -- Engrossing read about the life of one Ireland's favourite sons : Thoroughly enjoyed this biography of one of Irelands national Icons, all the way from his early years In England, his connection with his ancestral home in Tipperary, his years as a punk through to the successful years with the Pogues. But at what price success? Because by the end, we see his years of self-abuse have taken a huge toll. The biographer does a fine job of talking to all the key people in Shane's life, recounting key moments in his life, and placing the events of a chaotic life in some sort of order. It's not helped by Shane not being able or not wanting to contribute to his own story, except in occasional moments. Parts of it are a sad read, as he is a literary genius and a beautiful songwriter but he burnt out much too early. But you have to look at the enduring songs he did give to the world, and for that, this reader is grateful. As good a biography as you are going to read about Shane. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from jason walsh -- Magazine article? : An modest improvement on the awful A Drink with Shane Macgowan by Victoria Clarke- where all we learned was that Shane liked beetroot again and Victoria would sell her own head for a reality show! This book feels like a magazine interview stretched out across the wild tundra of a non fiction book with the help of needless repetition, quotes and the dullest of interviews. If Shane macgowan wanted the public to know his internist thoughts, by now, we would know them. He doesn't. Happily we have his songs instead. This book is like Macgowan career. A wasted opportunity. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from dsm909 -- Good Read : I've read (and seen) a considerable amount about MacGowan. The book had a slightly different focus to others with the majority not concerning itself directly The Pogues. It does not go into the specifics on certain areas that others do but none of it outstays its welcome. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 18, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from twattyballacks -- A cracking good read : Best book i’ve read about Shane Macgowan so far ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2021 )
